Sarah Burton Takes the Helm at Givenchy: A New Chapter for the Iconic Fashion House

In a highly anticipated move, Sarah Burton has been announced as the new creative director of Givenchy. The renowned designer, celebrated for her tenure at Alexander McQueen, will now lead the LVMH-owned fashion powerhouse into its next era.

Burton’s career is defined by her remarkable ability to blend delicate craftsmanship with bold, utilitarian design. After more than 25 years at Alexander McQueen, where she began as an assistant to the legendary Lee McQueen, Burton stepped into the role of creative director following McQueen's tragic death in 2010. Her vision softened the brand’s signature edge, transforming its dark, dramatic flair into something luxurious and wearable. She became known for fusing wardrobe staples—like structured blazers and rugged combat boots—with eye-catching punk-inspired jewellery and dramatic runway pieces, such as voluminous gowns adorned with oversized taffeta roses.

Burton’s transition to Givenchy marks a full-circle moment, as her late mentor, Lee McQueen, also once held the creative director position at the storied French house. McQueen's tenure from 1996 to 2001 was a period of disruption, during which he shook up Givenchy’s traditional image with provocative, avant-garde collections. Now, Burton steps into those same shoes, inheriting a brand that has seen a number of creative leaders in recent years, each leaving their own imprint.

The last decade has been a whirlwind for Givenchy. After Riccardo Tisci’s 12-year reign, which catapulted the brand to new heights with streetwear-inspired designs and a savvy pop culture presence, Clare Waight Keller took over in 2017. Her collections revisited the elegance of mid-century French fashion, even dressing Meghan Markle for her royal wedding. Most recently, Matthew Williams brought a gritty urban edge to Givenchy with his mix of sharp tailoring, bold utility details, and daring textures.

Burton's appointment follows a year-long search for a new creative leader after Williams’ departure in late 2023. While these transitions are often complex and require navigating contracts and competition clauses, this particular appointment took longer due to shifts within LVMH’s leadership. With the retirement and subsequent return of Sidney Toledano, LVMH’s Fashion Group CEO, and the recent hiring of Alessandro Valenti as Givenchy’s CEO, the brand now looks to reset and refine its direction.

With Burton at the creative helm, Givenchy is set to enter a new chapter—one that promises to merge her poetic vision with the brand’s iconic heritage. Known for her meticulous tailoring and innovative approach, Burton has the opportunity to further evolve Givenchy’s aesthetic, blending the timeless allure of Parisian chic with modern, wearable luxury.

As the fashion world eagerly anticipates her first collection, it’s clear that Sarah Burton’s Givenchy will offer a captivating mix of artistry, innovation, and sophistication.
